Flag Planting Ceremony (Updated again)

Update 2 (5/25 10pm): We have 32 people signed up so far. The coordinator told me that they only have 350 patches to hand out & they may have more scouts than that, so be sure to get there early. The program starts at 9am & he said it should only last "about 90 minutes". Keep in mind that the flyer says 9-12pm.
Scouts & Adult leaders- make sure you wear your full Class A uniform. It gets you free admission to the Exploratorium.
If any of you are still interested in going, it is not too late. Just let me know.

Update 1 (5/25 3pm): We have over 10 non-uniformed adults signed up so far and have secured a group rate of $10 per adult and $7 per child in case you want to bring siblings along. More details to come. Stay tuned.

Date: Saturday, May 29, 2010
Time: 9am - 12noon
Location: San Francisco National Cemetery, 1 Lincoln Blvd., Presidio of San Francisco (map)

Hi Pack 1776 families-

I know this is last minute but there is a Flag Planting Ceremony at the San Francisco National Cemetery this Saturday. It comes with patches and free admission to the Exploratorium. We need a quick head count by TODAY to reserve patches.

Let me know ASAP if you are interested.

- I need number of scouts attending & number of Adults.
- Uniforms get you in free to the exploratorium, so dress in full class A
- If we have enough people, we get discounts on the non uniformed adults & siblings.

Yours in Scouting,
Cubmaster Ed

P.S. Only scouts and adult leaders in full uniform will be admitted to Exploratorium for free.  Parents will have to pay the general admission of $15 per person.  If we have 10 or more non-uniformed parents, we should be able to get a group rate of $10 per person.

May Hike – Mt Diablo (Updated)

May 16: Updated directions and note sections.

Date: Saturday, May 22, 2010
Time: 12:00pm - 2:30pm
Location: Mt Diablo State Park

Trailhead: Curry Point, South Gate Road

Trail detail: It is an easy 3.3 loop trail with an elevation gain of 500 feet. Take the Knobcone Point Road from the parking lot for about 1 mile to Black Hawk Trail. Turn right and continue to Sycamore Creek Road. Turn right again to Devils Slide Trail and turn right. Begin climb out of Sycamore Canyon on this wonderful singletrack trail as it heads back to Knobcone Point Road, where you turn left back to the trailhead.  See highlighted trail in map.

Highlights: During our hike, we will review what we learned about all three types of rocks (from our camp at Del Valle). The Cub Scouts will be surprised to learn that Mt Diablo is sedimentary in origin.  It was laid down millions of years ago on the floor of the ocean. Within the last one to two million years, a piece of hard, red 160-million-year-old Franciscan rock was pushed up through six to eight miles of overlying rock and soil, tilting and distorting the rock layers and in some places turning them completely upside down. As a result, the fossilized remains of many sea creatures have been discovered here.

Directions: From Crow Canyon Rd continue onto Blackhawk Road. It becomes Diablo Road. Go to Mt. Diablo Scenic Boulevard and turn right.  At the Park boundary the road becomes South Gate Road. Continue up the mountain, past the entrance station to just past Rock City. Park in the Curry Point view area on the left.

Note: This is a great hike but part of it is arduous (avoid heavy lunch).  Please bring a bottle of water and sun screen.  After the hike, we could go for an ice-cream.

What to bring:

  • Park brochure and map.
  • Entrance fee $10 per car.  You can car pool and reduce vehicle emissions and charges.
  • Food, snack (granola bars, trail mix, fruit), water.
  • Binoculars, camera, sunscreen.
  • Layer your clothes.

The new May/June issue may not have arrived in your mailbox yet, but the e-edition is already available online, cover-to-cover.  Check it out and don't miss the section covering the Cub Scouts program changes.
