Fall Camping

Some people think Scouting means camping. While Scouting is not just camping, it never seems complete without it. If you have never been camping before you may want to know "what do you need to take camping?", well fear not, you can find all you need to by looking on websites such as activeprod.net, so you are prepared to take on the outdoors. As the best season for camping starts, there is camping ALMOST every weekend! (woo-hoo!) So it is well worth looking at somewhere like outdoorcommand.com to stock up on your camping essentials for the season! One night or two nights, near or far, causal or structured, you are guaranteed to find something that suits you. So get your pen or PDA or phone out and start marking your calendar!

Oct 9-10: A Pack overnighter at Bort Meadow, Castro Valley - It's a Pack meeting in the outdoors! Besides the usual ceremonies and skits, there will be campfire, smores, flag retirement, and group games. Your boys are gonna like it, so are you. Stay tuned for more detail.

Oct 16-17: MDSC Webeloree at Camp Herms - Exclusive to the Webelos and their parents, this overnighter is a lot of fun and the Scouts will earn 4 pins in one weekend! It is so popular that the event is already full. Still interested? Check with the Council on waiting list.

Oct 22-24: MDSC Cub Family Camp at Camp Lindblad - It won't be fair if only the Webelos have fun, will it? This camp is open to all Cub Scouts and family. Activities are pre-planned, and the boys will learn something new while having tons of fun. Find detail in this booklet and go here for registration. Besides fun, participation in this camp fulfill requirements of Outdoor Activity Award, Year of Celebration Award, requirements of various belt loops and achievements/electives of your rank. Why would you think twice?!

Nov 5-7: Pack camping at Mt. Diablo State Park - It's our annual Fall camping trip, and this time it is so conveniently located at our own backyard! You got to meet friends, have fun, and enjoy the great outdoors. Can you really say no to it? More detail to come.

Happy first day of Fall!

DIRECTV’s Support of the BSA Helps Wallets, Councils

Back in June, DIRECTV announced a new relationship with the Boy Scouts of America and an opportunity for the Scouting community to support local councils as new DIRECTV subscribers.

The relationship will help subscribers’ wallets as well as councils. Beginning August 1, new DIRECTV subscribers who sign up using a special Scouting telephone number will receive a $100 credit on their bill in the form of 10 $10 bill credits.

Also, for each new subscriber who signs up using the Scouting number that will be provided, DIRECTV will donate $75 to the local council initiating the new subscription. This money will help councils fund camperships, scholarships, or other council needs to support local units.  Go here for the exclusive BSA number and more information of the offer.

DIRECTV also have plans to offer a new online education module for Scouting that will help unit leaders teach math, science, and technology to their Scouts.  More details on how to take advantage of this opportunity will be forthcoming.  Stay tuned.

MDSC FOS Matching Gifts

Message from the Council ...

Make your FOS dollars go the extra mile……

We are wrapping up our annual Friends of Scouting Campaign and are at 58% ($509,649) of the goal ($871,000). We need your help to achieve the goal by June 30th, so we can continue to deliver a quality character building program to the youth in our communities.

A BIG THANKS to all the families and businesses that have supported the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council in 2010. If you have not already done so or would like to make an additional gift, please visit our website or click this link to make a donation now or contact your District Executive.

Make your FOS donation stretch even further by checking with your company to see if they have a matching gifts program. Hundreds of companies in our area will “match” your contribution to the FOS campaign. Many will do a direct match of your contribution, others might contribute twice your donation and some will match your volunteer hours. Please visit our website for a list of some the “matching gift” companies or visit your Human Resources Department. If your company does match, please get the proper form from your employer, complete it, and turn it in to your District Executive or the Council Service Center.

Check the website often to watch the mercury rise in our FOS Thermometer.

Thanks for your support!
