Special Message on Youth Protection from the Meridian District
Fellow Meridian District Parents,
Recently there was an incident in the Meridian District involving a parent leader who was accused and arrested by the San Ramon Police for being in possession of child pornography. At this time it is believed that none of the materials involve members of our organization, although the investigation is still underway. As a Scout Leader it would be bad enough if there were evidence of him visiting adult pornography websites like https://www.tubev.sex/?hl=es although these types of websites are legal it's still not something we would encourage or condone for our Leaders. Any media contact should be referred to Valerie Ridgers at Mt. Diablo Silverado Council offices in Pleasant Hill.
We would like to share our official position and actions with respect to this matter as follows:
- The adult was a registered leader and underwent a background check that came up clean. His membership has been revoked.
Every youth-facing leader is expected to register with Boy Scouts of America using the standard form which requires a Social Security Number. If an adult wishes not to give his or her Social Security Number he or she will not be permitted to lead a Den, Pack, Troop, Outing, Event, or any other Boy or Cub Scout activity which by definition depends on the integrity of responsible and trustworthy parent leaders. This is a non-negotiable policy. No registration - No leader. Period.
- The San Ramon Police Department, and the courts will decide the case, Boy Scouts of America will not. We are a nation of laws and due process and we defer to those public agencies in the execution of their lawful duties. If it is determined that members of our organization have broken the law, or knowingly abused or harmed other members they will be removed and referred to the authorities. Adult leaders of Boy Scouts of America are required to report to the Scout Executive any suspicion or knowledge of child abuse of any kind. If any adult suspects an abuse situation be it from an unrelated adult, or a child's own parents, he or she is required by BSA and California State Law to report.
- Boy Scouts of America has taken steps to prepare for and counter the possibility of inappropriate situations between adults and children. Each and every adult leader is required to take the Youth Protection Training every two years, and other trainings include further instruction on the subject. Adults are required to adhere to the concept of Two-Deep Leadership. The video called It Happened To Me which is age appropriate for our youth members should be shown and discussed at every unit to teach children useful defense methods. These things are presently offered to the membership on an Honor System basis. This is going to change very soon to a requirement with verification.
Boy Scouts of America is a community organization with a goal of helping parents teach our youth Character and Leadership. We have a system to do that and we rely on the participation, integrity and commitment of our fellow parents to carry it out. We prepare and protect ourselves and each other as well as we can, as responsibly as we know how. We do not cover up bad behavior for the sake of protecting our image or our friends. The safety of our youth is always our first priority.

9 year-old Cub Scout, Derek S. from Pack 215 in Walnut Creek has designed the winning patch to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.
There are 3 versions of patch.
Gold Border
There are 100 numbered patches (#1-#100).
#1 and #100 will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. The auction will begin at 9am on April 5th and will close at 5pm on April 9th. The starting bid will begin at $100. The highest bidder at the end of the auction will be able to choose either #1 or #100. The 2nd highest bidder will receive the remaining number. To participate in the auction you can email your bid to Chelsea McClain at [email protected] starting at 9am on April 5th. The current highest bid will be announced on our website (www.bsa-mdsc.org) every evening during the auction.
#2-#99 will be sold on a first come, first served basis for $100 starting April 12th until supplies last. You will ONLY be able to reserve them online through our website (www.bsa-mdsc.org) starting April 12th and will need to mail or bring your payment to the Council Office within 7 days of your reservation. If we do not receive your payment within those 7 days, that patch will be up for purchase again.
The purchase of these patches should be made after your historical Friends of Scouting gift has been made for 2010. All proceeds from the sale of the gold bordered patches will go to the general operating fund which supports the Scouting programs of the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council.

March Hike – Tilden Park

Location: Tilden Nature Study Area, Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley
A view of Mount Tamalpais rising from San Francisco Bay will be the reward for hiking to the top of Wildcat Peak in Tilden Park. This trail loops through eucalyptus and oak forests, up moderately steep hills, then back to one of the best nature study areas in the Bay Area.

AND, special congratulations to our very own Saket A. from Den 12 who won the council wide Blackhawk 500 patch as displayed above. The patch contest was open to all the over 10,000 cub scout youths council wide. AWESOME JOB! Congrats!!

The 11th Annual Mt. Diablo Silverado Pinewood Derby Championship is coming to the Blackhawk Auto Museum in Danville on April 24th, 2010! All Cubs from within the Council are invited to participate.
There will be racing, a design competition & great food. We will once again have an open Class for Boy Scouts and Adults! During the event the whole family can tour the Blackhawk Museum's magnificent auto collection and the fabulous exhibits. There will be tons of neat stuff to see and do! Wear your Scout uniform and get in free.
Mandatory car inspections and impounding will occur at the Council Office from 7:00pm to 8:30pm on April 19th, 20th, and 21st. Event rules will be posted here when they become available.

Ice Cream Scooping Scouts Needed at Family Fun Night

Every year Pack 1776 participates in the “Family Fun Night for Book Fair” at Coyote Creek by wearing our uniforms and helping out by scooping ice cream. Everything has been provided for us and they simply need the Cubpower (& parents!) to make it happen. It’s a good experience for the Cubs and promotes Pack awareness within the school.

USS Pompanito Submarine Overnighter!
