Pack 1776,
The Bay Bridge is currently being rebuilt and we have been offered an awesome touring opportunity of this monumental part of history. Steve Padilla from Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Projects will give us a tour at the Public Information Office (PIO) in Oakland during the winter school break on December 21st at 2:30pm.
Here’s the agenda:
- Welcome / introductions
- Bay Bridge engineer presentation
- Discuss why the new Bay Bridge is built
- Review a booklet on the Self Anchored Suspension
- Build marshmallow/toothpick bridges
- Climb inside life-size models of the tower
- Closure
This 2-hour event will all be conducted at the PIO. We WILL NOT be walking on the Bay Bridge or taking a boat tour.
Due to limited capacity (20 youths), priority will be given to scouts first. Look for an invitation email from me on November 10th. Reply to the email with your scout's name and the number of adults to sign up. No other evite will be sent. First reply first serve. Any spots not taken by November 17th will be open to siblings. The party is from 6 to 8. We have access to the MPR starting at 4:30. Please be set up and ready to go by 6:00. Remember to sign up to help man your booth so that everyone can enjoy the party. 1/2 hour increments are nice. Please remember to supply what you need for your booth/activity including decorations! The pack will provide you with some candy to hand out to participants and some play money for the winners of the activities to go and exchange for prizes.
Concessions will be available for a very nominal fee... We're just going to have pizza and water available. That night it's all about the candy and prizes!
Don't forget to DRESS UP!! It is a HALLOWEEN party! The kids have even MORE fun when they see that we are getting involved!

Don’t miss a great day for Football at AT&T Park. On Saturday November 5th bring your Pack to the ballpark to watch Cal take on Washington State in an exciting Pac-12 match-up. Your ticket includes a great seating location close to the action in our Premium Sideline Seats and an exclusive pre-game opportunity for your Pack to play in the Coca Cola fan lot before the ballpark opens! All the scouts will have the chance to slide down the Coca Cola Super Slide and run around the “Little Giants Park” for some great pre-game fun. Webelos from Pack 1776 had a great weekend at historic Camp Herms in the El Cerrito hills. Everything was well organized, well staffed, and packed full of fun.
The Webelos started Saturday morning by setting up their tents in the lower field. The scouts did the majority of the set up with very minimal help from the adults. They all did a fine job.
After the opening flag ceremony and rousing songs, our Pack started the morning at the Forester Unit. Mr. Harrison, from Boy Scout Troop #24, taught the scouts about tree growth rings, the five layers of a forest, 6 forest trees, 6 forest plants, how water/minerals/sun help, and about the harm/benefits of wildfires.
Our group then moved onto the Outdoorsman Unit. Boy Scouts from Troop # 24 used a skit format to thoroughly go over every point about the Leave No Trace Frontcountry Guidelines (plan ahead, stick to trails, manage your pet, leave what you find, respect other visitors, trash your trash). The Webelos also learned about the rules of outdoor fire safety and practiced how to fuse and whip the ends of a rope. Here they used the rope they fused to make a paracord bracelet with a side release buckle. We ended this unit by making our foil dinner with chicken, potatoes, and vegetables.
Then we gathered under the beautiful redwoods and had a picnic with our bagged lunch. The scouts played and the adults relaxed.
At the signal, we moved on to the Geologist Unit, led by Geologist Michael L. and Boy Scouts from Troop # 100. This was a well prepared, hands on unit. They touched real fossils, learned the four different ways mountains are formed, examined minerals in various uses and geologic materials used in home building, and talked with geologist Michael L. about the rocks found at Camp Herm and geology mapping of the area. (Very interesting stuff!) Before leaving this unit, the scouts received a special rock as a memento.
The final station they visited on Saturday was led by biologist, Mr. Dekloe, from Troop 864. Here the Webelos earned their Naturalist pin by learning about an ecosystem, an aquadic ecosystem & wetland, flyways near our area, dangers of litter, and poisonous plants & animals. We also went on a short hike and learned about non-native plants, how some plants use nitrogen in the soil, what poison oak looks like and why we should avoid it, stinging nettle, poisonous hemlock, poppy seed disbursement, and the difference in pine cones.
After our closing flag ceremony, we ate our delicious foil dinner of chicken, vegetables, and potatoes. The evening was capped off with two different shows. We first visited the amazing AstroWizard, Mr. Rodrigues, who educated the scouts on space and science related topics using pictures, props, bubbles, telescope, and exciting explosions. And finally, a well run campfire program led by Boy Scout Troop #127 entertained the entire camp audience with fun songs and funny skits.
Next year’s Webeloree is planned at Camp Herms for October 6-7, 2012. So, mark your calendars and save the date.

Come join us at the Boy Scouts of America own historic Camp Herms for some Fall camping!!
This camp serves as a year-round camp and is situated atop the El Cerrito Hills and can be used as the hub of local historical site visits to San Francisco and the surrounding area. Historic Camp Herms was originally named Camp Berkeley and opened for use in 1930. The camp was renamed Camp William B. Herms in 1939. Hiking trails, including the Fages Historic Trail, are nearby.
Chemical toilets are near the campsite and flush toilets and showers are a short walk away. We have reserved the Redwood Grove for camping and the Quarry area for meals, campfires and activities.
As always, the cost is minimal - $15/person/night which covers the site, food, and all activities.
If you decide to stay only one night, please let us know which night you are staying.
**As a special incentive, all scouts who sign up will receive their very own mess kit to use during the trip and to keep as their own **
We also highly encourage all other family members to bring their own reusable dining sets for meal times to reduce our trash and our Pack footprint.
Payment MUST be received BY October 24th to secure your spots! This is to allow for proper planning and selection of helpers. No excuses please. A standard policy of No Refunds applies.

"What's my line again?" Rehearsal makes for a great performance! Everyone does a skit, even the den leaders. Get ready to sing, dance and crack up at the funny skits. Say "good-bye" to "shy"!

Awards, and a special presentation of the Bobcat Badges to our new cubs as we welcome them to Pack 1776 by Committee Chair Steve and me.

To Reach The Park
From San Ramon, I-680 South to connect on I-580 westbound, take the Strobridge Avenue exit. Turn right on Strobridge, right on Castro Valley Boulevard (take the left lane as soon as possible, and left on Lake Chabot Road. The Lake Chabot Marina is about two miles ahead on the right. (map) From I-580 in San Leandro, exit at Fairmont Drive and go east (uphill). The marina entrance will be to the left at the bottom of the hill.
$5 parking fee but there are free parking outside the park, depending on the time of the day, there should be plenty.
Water and capri sun will be provided otherwise bring your own picnic and relax with the family.
We are encouraging people to bring personal canteen or water bottle and we'll have water station for refill.
Bring jacket just in case the weather change.

Save the date for L.E.A.D scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2012.
Scout "Leader Education And Discovery" (L.E.A.D.) is a full day of relevant, inspiring, and required Adult Leader classes held at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill by MDSC. Dozens of sessions will be available to support leader competence in all Scouting aspects, from outdoor skills to national policies. This is also the best opportunity for leaders to build their network and be inspired by successful Scouters who have experience with issues and opportunities that are common in many units.
More information about class schedules, instructors, and registration will be coming soon. While that is being finalized, we wanted to let you know about this important event so you can get it into your personal calendars immediately. We look forward to seeing you on January 21.

The Bay Area Orienteering Club is pleased to offer the nineteenth annual Scout-O, a cross country map and compass adventure designed to test the map reading ability, compass skills and woodsman savvy regardless of experience.
Cub Scouts of all ages are welcome. No prior experience needed. Instruction will be offered prior to the event so that all Scouts, regardless of prior experience, will be able to take part in the actual competition. There will be courses of four distinct levels of difficulty, so that no Scout should encounter a challenge beyond his capabilities. Be prepared and head over to BAOC's website for sample maps and instructions.
Important information can be found in this document. Here are the important points:
- Scout need to run in pairs with an adult trailing behind.
- First team of all the scouts attending will run at 10 am. Start times are spaced 2 minutes apart and by course. Start times are set by event organizer.
- Every participating scout will earn a patch.
- We need to pre-register with names and how teams will be paired up.
