Cubmobile Race
Date: Sunday, May 16, 2010
Setup: 10:30am - Noon
Race: Noon - 3:00pm
Dear Scouts and Parents,
The most fun and exciting event is almost upon us, the Cubmobile Race will be held on Sunday, May 16th from Noon-3 PM. The Scouts of Pack 1776 will be racing their dens' Cubmobile from the top of the ramp… then being launched by the power of gravity… with nerves of steel… steering their Cubmobile across the finish line… and occasionally… at the end… remembering to HIT THE BRAKE!! This is a timed event, every Scout will race at least twice, and everyone wins a medal for participating. The Scouts LOVE this event and we hope to see you ALL on the race day. if you love racing in real cars, take a look at this 1958 chevrolet apache.
Attached are some of the race car design specifics:
* In contrast with the Pinewood Derby, it is o.k. to recycle old cubmobile carcasses from prior years if your den has access to one.
* Tires must be 10 inches or less in diameter.
* Any rubber tires are acceptable (hard rubber or pneumatic) EXCEPT bicycle tires. Bicycle tires and rims are not safe for this event!
* Wheels may incorporate wheel bearings.
* Any axel type is acceptable for this event (if used, lag screws should be at least 3/8in dia. and 3.5 inches long)
* All framing used in constructing the car should be maximum 2inX4in.
* The turning radius of the cubmobile MUST BE LIMITED by a means such as blocks located less than ½-inch from the frame on the steering arm.
* No additional weights may be added to the cars for the purpose of gaining momentum. Make the car strong enough to survive the race, but adding extra weights is not safe for the drivers or the poor dads at the finish line who have to stop the cars. Additional weights will be removed.
* Don’t have any sharp objects on the car that could impale the driver or a spectator.
* All cars must have a brake.
* All cars must have a seat belt.
* All racers must wear a helmet.
* Decorate the cars as much as you can! Building cars is a tall order for especially the little guys, but painting and decorating them is fun for everyone!
Volunteers are needed and your Den Leaders will be contacting you!

MDSC 2010 Centennial Polo
MDSC has created some unique embroidered polo shirts to celebrate 100 years of Scouting. They are now available for a $25 donation. (It would make an impressive statement about MDSC spirit if all adults who attend NorCal wear this shirt on Saturday.) Port Authority brand, Black with collar, Council design is embroidered onto the front. Really nice.
See a picture below and get more details at http://50miler.com - click MDSC Shirts.
Here is how to get these shirts.
1. Come to the Council Office on Wednesday or Thursday, April 14-15 and get them. Shirts will be available between the hours of 11:00 and 14:00 or by special arrangement. Checks and cash only.
2. Send an order via snail mail to Gilwell Group, 1048 Alicante Drive, Danville CA 94526. (Or you can call 925-855-0678). We will get you the shirts at NorCal or make arrangements for you to pick them up at the Council Office. Write the name of your District on the check.
3. Leave a comment on http://50miler.com and click MDSC Shirts or send me an email ([email protected]). Include your name, phone number, quantity, and District. We will contact you to work out details. (Since this is my home District, Meridian leaders can schedule a shirt pick up at my house).
You can collect the shirts at NorCal Jamboree or make arrangements to get them – but we cannot take your money in the Alameda Fairgrounds.
S, M, L, XL, 2XL available. Order for your entire unit.
Make checks payable to (MDSC) Mt. Diablo Silverado Council. Do not miss this opportunity to get Centennial shirts for all your active adults. You will be sorry if you do. And they won't be happy either!
Good Scouting

April Hike – Lake Del Valle
Date: Sunday, April 18, 2010
Time: 1:30pm - 3:30pm
Location: Lake Del Valle, Livermore
This 3.8 mile loop hike is easy. Trailhead elevation is around 745 feet. Top elevation for the featured hike is about 1130 feet. Trails climb at reasonable grades, and the total elevation change is about 700 feet. Folks new to hiking can shorten the featured hike, or choose an easier, mostly level walk along the shores of the reservoir.
[stextbox id="info" caption="Hike Statistics" align="center"]Distance: 3.8 miles
Time: 2 hours
Be sure to read: Hike info and map[/stextbox] [stextbox id="info" caption="Directions" align="center"]From Interstate 580 in Alameda County, exit Central Livermore/North Livermore Avenue (exit 52b). Drive south on North Livermore, which turns into South Livermore, passes through downtown, makes a sharp left curve, and turns into Tesla Road (about 3.5 miles from 580). Just past the curve, look for the brown "parks" sign and turn right onto Mines Road. Drive about 3.5 miles, at which point Mines Road veers left. Follow the brown parks signs, and stay straight on Del Valle Road about another 3.5 miles to the park entrance kiosk, on the right side of the road. Park near the snack bar if possible.[/stextbox] [stextbox id="info" caption="What to Bring" align="center"]Food, snack (granola bars, trail mix, fruit), water.
