Scouting for Food

Scouting for FoodDate: November 18-21, 2009

More than ever before, our community needs us to "Do a Good Turn Daily"!

Our pack will be participating in the Scouting for Food event which runs from November 14th-21st.  The goal is to place the Scouting for Food hangers on the front door knobs in our assigned area starting November 18th.  We would then pick-up the donated items on November 21st.

Each Den must assign a Den representative to pick up maps with high-lighted routes assigned to each Den and the door hangers. The Den Leaders will need to coordinate their Cub Scouts hanging the door hangers on either Nov 18th, 19th or 20th before it gets dark. The Dens will need to pick up the donations from their assigned routes after 9:00 am on Saturday November 21st and bring it to outside Coyote Creek School’s MPR between 10 AM and 11 AM.

Den leaders should ensure that their den has representation and, at a minimum, arrange for collection of the high-lighted route maps and hangers.  The den leaders are responsible for coordinating and communicating their den's participation in this event.

Check your email for more information.

October Field Trip – Hawk Hill

Updated 2 (10/29/2009): Videos of this event posted HERE and HERE.
Updated 1 (10/26/2009): Pictures of this event can be found HERE.

Date: Sunday, October 25, 2009
Time: 11:45 AM - 3:00 PM
Location: Hawk Hill (Golden Gate Raptor Observatory 415-331-0730)

11:45am - 1:30pm: Hawk Talks and Banding Demonstration on Hawk Hill

A Golden Gate Raptor Observatory volunteer gives an hour-long talk about hawk migration, identification, and monitoring, complete with bird photos and examples of wings, tails, and talons. Then at 1pm, a newly banded hawk is brought up and shown to the crowd. A banding volunteer talks about GGRO’s banding program, and the hawk is released in front of the crowd.

1:30pm - 3:00pm Fort Cronkhite at Rodeo beach

After the Hawk release, about 1:30, we'll take a very short drive to the Fort Cronkhite.

We are going to meet at the parking lot at the end of Mitchell road. We will do about 1.5 mile hike around the Rodeo Lagoon. The hiking trail is rocky dirt, so it is NOT stroller accessible.

On your own after the hike, you may visit Golden Gate Raptor Observatory Open House event at Fort Cronkhite until 4:00pm. There will be Scientific Displays, Radio-telemetry Demonstrations, Kid Crafts and Activities, GGRO 25th Anniversary Product Sales.

[stextbox id="info" caption="Directions to Hawk Hill" float="true" align="center"]

From 101 south - Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and take the second exit Alexander Avenue. Get in the left lane following signs that read "101 San Francisco". Turn left at the stop sign and cross under the freeway. Turn right onto Conzelman Road and drive 1.8 miles to Hawk Hill. Park alongside the road before it becomes one way and then walk up the west side of Hawk Hill past the locked gate. It's just a few hundred feet to the summit.

From 101 north - After going through the Waldo Tunnel, take the last Sausalito exit to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (the signs read Golden Gate National Recreation Area/Sausalito). Stay to the left. Turn left at the stop sign then right up the hill onto Conzelman Road. Stay on Conzelman Road for 1.8 miles. You will see a sign for Hawk Hill.[/stextbox]

[stextbox id="alert" caption="Alert" float="true" align="center"]There are NO food or beverage vendors in the Marin Headlands. You are advised to bring a picnic lunch and anything else you may need! There are many cafes and restaurants in Sausalito - not a long distance away, but with weekend traffic and tourism it could take up to 30 minutes to travel one way.[/stextbox] [stextbox id="warning" caption="Weather Advisory" float="true" align="center"]The weather is unpredictable so please dress in layers. Click here for current weather observations.[/stextbox]
