Welcome Back Kickoff

Hi Pack 1776 Returning Families,

This email is to inform you we are holding our annual Welcome Back Kickoff from 3:00pm-5:00pm on Saturday, September 8th, at Coyote Crossing Park on Rosincress Drive in San Ramon.

The Welcome Kickoff event is where you come to welcome you back and to meet potential new parents who are thinking of joining our pack. During this time, you will have an opportunity to do the following:

  • Complete a volunteer interest form (we use this to match parent skills and interests with volunteer opportunities).
  • Pay annual registration fee of $100.00. Checks preferred, and we do not have the ability to process credit or debit cards.
  • Your boy will receive the 2012-2013 Pack 1776 T-Shirt.

For those not able to attend, please complete the form and make payment at the first Pack Meeting.

IMPORTANT:

Please open and print out the Parent Volunteer Form pages 1 and 2, as these will need to be turned in when you submit your application and payment. This year, we would like to encourage more participation in the wide range of volunteer opportunities within the pack. This document gives a description of the duties and responsibilities events and positions. If you have any questions on any of these roles, feel free to email me.

This is a very exciting time for Pack 1776. We currently have 58 active cubs and over 50 families have recently expressed interest in joining. The 2012-2013 year is filled with lots of fun things and we hope you will enjoy your return to the pack.

The First Pack Meeting is next week Wednesday, September 12th 7pm to 8pm at Coyote Creek MPR.

We look forward to seeing you at the Welcome Kickoff next Saturday and Pack Meeting next week!

Regards,

Summer Camping 2012 Re-cap

The summer camping trip at beautiful Sugar Pine Point State Park at Lake Tahoe was a tremendous success last weekend. Whilst I'm definitely more likely to want to stay at one of the many Lake Tahoe California Hotels for my next visit, camping really wasn't as bad as I had expected.

After battling traffic, most campers made it to the campsite in the evening and got their tents before sunset. We had a great fire, some campfire stories, smores and a chance to looking at the amazing stars (a few falling) under the clear, warm summer sky. A recurring theme from those stories was the pros and cons of a motorhome vs RV vs caravan. Regardless, we all agreed that a comprehensive insurance was essential; more so the add-ons offered by your insurance partner. For instance, if you were to choose Staveley Head as your insurance partner of choice, you also get motorhome breakdown insurance as part of the add-on options to your standard motorhome cover.

We woke up Saturday to the smell of pancakes, eggs and coffee. The scouts again received their own scout-approved mess kits to keep. We did an opening flag ceremony and then went into our first activity of the day, the Soccer belt loop. After some instruction on dribbling, shooting and passing, the kids went into an exciting 6 vs. 6 game that was a nail biter to the end with the winning goal scored on a last second penalty kick by Rohan. After lunch, we headed off on a hike that took us along the old 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympic Cross Country Ski route and ended up at beautiful Lake Tahoe right next to the spectacular Historic Erhman Mansion (we all decided it would make a great summer home for us :)). After a hike in hot sun, the cool water of the lake was just what we needed. The Scouts had a great time wading around near the shore and skipping rocks. After a short hike back to camp, we spent some free time playing frisbee, volleyball and new chase game introduced by some of the new campers. Foil cooking was up next for dinner and, as an added treat, foil banana boats (with marshmallows, chocolate and butterscotch chips all melted together) for desert. I think for our next camping trip we should more than likely look at finding ourselves a stormkök so we're able to cook and clean up better, and so we don't use loads of foil too! We finished off the night with a touching flag retirement ceremony around the campfire and then some music by resident musician, Cubmaster Pluth.

The next morning, we had a light breakfast, packed up our gear, did our traditional "leave no trace" sweep of the campsite, and headed on our way.

It was wonderful to see so many new campers out there this trip and I want to thank everyone for making this another successful Pack 1776 camping trip!

Spring Camping 2012 Re-cap

The Spring camping trip at beautiful New Brighton State Beach near Capitola was a great success and a ton of fun. The weather and beach were spectacular!

After camp setup and smores Friday night, we woke up Saturday to a full day of activities (and a few raccoon footprints..). The scouts started off the Saturday by receiving their own scout-approved mess kits to keep and test out with a nice hearty breakfast. We then headed down to the beach for a vigorous game of Ultimate Frisbee and, afterwards, a creative and competitive sea creature themed sand sculpture contest. The finalist were a jellyfish by the Bears, an octopus by the Webelos I and the ugly fish by the Webelos II. After intense debate by an international panel of judges (two local beachgoers, one who only spoke Russian), the Ugly Fish took the grand prize. After lunch, we headed down the coast for a hike lead by Steve Jackson to the Sea Cliff pier to view the historic Palo Alto, a WWI supply ship sunk in 1929. After the hike, the boys had free time to play tag, climb logs and explore back at the camp.  Before dinner, Jack Pluth, Ammy Pluth and James Sevier lead the scouts through the Science belt loop where they learned all about molecules and even got to build their own with gumdrops (which they promptly ate). After dinner (foil cooking!), the evening was wrapped up with songs and ghost stories led by Cubmaster Pluth and smores.

The following morning we wrapped up the trip with fresh coffee and a delicious breakfast, handed out the belt loops (Ultimate Frisbee and Science) and the many different patches earned on the trip, packed up and headed out.

One of the great things about these trips is that everyone pitches for the meals and activities and we become one big family so a BIG thank you to everyone for making the Spring Camping 2012 trip a great success!!

San Ramon Art & Wind Festival-Volunteers Needed!!

It’s that time of the year again! We are asking the entire Pack 1776 Cub Scout family to participate in the sales of our Cotton Candy Fundraiser at the 2012 San Ramon Art & Wind Festival.

Last year, in addition to having a great time, we were able to raise enough money to keep our annual dues at the same low rate in previous years, while earning extra cash to present fun, new events, like the Raingutter Regatta and the Chabot Outdoor Pack Meeting.

In an effort to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to participate, please note the following guidelines:

1.) At least one parent is required to be with their participating scout in this fundraiser but the entire family is most welcome to join and have fun.
2.) Each shift must have at least 1 Scout Leader present. There will be no more than 4 scouts present inside the booth during any shift.
3.) Try to remember to maintain a Scout attitude while participating in this fundraiser. Don't forget that you are all perfect 1776 Gentlemen. We should always thank those who we have asked and always wish them a good day, to encourage proper attitude demonstrating good manners and conduct. Class A uniform.

Memorial Day Weekend Flag Planting – RSVP by tomorrow

Pack 1776,

As a reminder, we are participating in a Memorial Day grave decoration this year at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno on Saturday, May 28th. This is typically one of the most meaningful events of the year, given the importance of the holiday and direct involvement the scouts will have in honoring our nation's fallen heroes. The ceremony will begin promptly at 8:30am and we will likely be completed with the flag planting by 10:30am.

Please take a moment and RSVP for this event so we know how many patches to order for our pack. You can do so through the evite link below:

For more information, please see the attached PDF. Should you have any additional questions, please let me know.

Raingutter Regatta Pack Meeting Tonight…Class B uniforms

Hi Pack 1776!

Sending a quick reminder the Raingutter Regatta pack meeting is tonight at 7:00pm, and class B (pack t-shirts) are the attire. Usual location...Coyote Creek MPR. Boys will probably get a little wet, so no need for the full class A uniform.

The event tonight will be a lot of fun, and our goal is fun and SAFE! With water comes some risk. Our priorities are safety first, then fun, and we will have both! Most of the leaders will be busy running the races, so please help us keep the boys safe by monitoring the boys and areas around the tracks for spilled water. If you see water on the floor please help keep the floors around the track dry. There will be towels and a mop.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Thanks,

Steve
